Should Frank Quatrone have a higher salary than Betsy Devos?
Why
caps are fair:
Betsy Devos is the Secretary of Education (President’s
Cabinet). Her salary is $199,700.
The salary for New Jersey’s Commissioner of Education
is $141,000.
Even with the current superintendent cap in place for
New Jersey, local superintendent salaries can far exceed the salaries of those listed
above. There is something wrong.
Why
caps are necessary:
The towns and cities most ripe for abuse are those
that are low income and dominated by a political machine. Lodi meets both criteria.
California provides many examples of what happens when
States do not impose caps on local public employees. The example of Bell, California is provided
below:
Should the Lodi Superintendent make more than the Secretary
of Education?
