Why Superintendent caps are fair and NECESSARY…



      
Should Frank Quatrone have a higher salary than Betsy Devos?


Why caps are fair:


Betsy Devos is the Secretary of Education (President’s Cabinet).  Her salary is $199,700.


The salary for New Jersey’s Commissioner of Education is $141,000.


Even with the current superintendent cap in place for New Jersey, local superintendent salaries can far exceed the salaries of those  listed above.  There is something wrong.


Why caps are necessary:


The towns and cities most ripe for abuse are those that are low income and dominated by a political machine.  Lodi meets both criteria.


California provides many examples of what happens when States do not impose caps on local public employees.  The example of Bell, California is provided below:
