Lodi deserves a fair process in filling a public seat…

I was very concerned when I saw the latest revised public notice for Wednesday’s meeting.  It mentions that the Board may appoint a new Trustee.  It doesn’t include a Resolution to go into closed session to deliberate.

The New Jersey School Board’s Association lists a process for making appointments for Board vacancies.

4.  After the interviews are finished, the board can go into executive (closed) session to deliberate.

Joe Leto assured me yesterday that the Board will definitely deliberate after interviews are completed and this can be done in open session.  I was glad to hear this.

After all, how can an appointment take place without deliberations?  What criteria is being used?  How are candidates scored?  What are their strengths and weaknesses?  How do the candidates match up?

In the past, the Lodi politicians didn't have any process for their appointments.  Whoever they were choosing would show up to the meeting all dressed up and with some family accompanying them.  They knew in advance that they were getting the seat and being sworn in the same night.
