Emails of elected officials are public records…

“Email correspondence by an elected official, even with private citizens, is deemed a public record under state OPRA laws — with few exceptions — as long as the emails concern official business.  Anyone can request copies, for any reason.” 


“Everyone needs to know that if you send us an email on the public server, it could be OPRA’ed by anyone,” said Walsh

From my conversations with officials from other public entities, I have learned that emails requested through OPRA are often handled by someone from IT to ensure that all requested public records are turned over.
