Repost from 5/4/15: Your Last Name Shouldn’t Determine What You Pay in Property Taxes.

*  Almost every town in Bergen County has had one or more reassessments since the economic downturn of 2008 in order to bring assessments in line with true value.

*  Although Lodi has not been reassessed in the last 12 years, a very large number of “family and friends” of Lodi politicians had their taxes lowered “in house” without ever filing a tax appeal with the County.  Many had their taxes lowered simply by speaking to Tony Luna or some other politician in Borough Hall.

*  Here is just one of many examples:

*  Marcel Wurms was handed a $65,000 NO BID contract by his close personal friend, the Lodi mayor, to represent Lodi against tax appeals.

*  But Marcel Wurms had his family’s assessment reduced $34,000 “in house” without ever filing an appeal with the County.  This reduction occurred without any physical change to the property or sale taking place.

*  In 2014 alone, this property owner paid $1,085.62 less in taxes.

*  I am sure the rest of Lodi would love to have that extra cash in their pocket.
