“Audit details $130,000 in improper spending, culture of mistrust in Waukee school district”

Link to article from the Des Moines Register:

I think we can all see similarities to Lodi in these reports.

From the article:

“"A 'culture' was established where this type of behavior or actions carried no consequences and sent a message there was no need to consistently enforce board policies," the audit says.

And,

Auditors also admonished the school board for failing to provide proper fiduciary oversight, which ultimately "enabled a dysfunctional work environment with a lack of accountability and trust." Specifically, the board did not exercise oversight in the personal use of district equipment, monitoring travel expenses, or ensuring compliance with district policies.”

This bad behavior would have carried on without consequence had the two state legislators not called for the state auditor to investigate the district.  They called for the investigation after multiple news reports were published by the Des Moines Register.

Too often, board members don’t provide the necessary oversight.  State agencies provide no oversight until news reporters force them to do their jobs.

How can you have say a $67,000,000 school budget and not have any oversight?
