From the article:
“Voters overwhelmingly denied the proposal, according
to unofficial election results Tuesday night. Early counts show that an
estimated 638 voted in favor of the project and 2,225 voted against. The count
included absentee ballots, city officials said.”
And,
“Patricia Hoffman, a retiree who has lived in Hackensack for 18 years,
said a $300 increase in annual expenses would be enough to drive residents
out of the city — especially those on a fixed income. That’s why she voted
against it.
“It has to be taken into consideration what we can do, and what we
can’t, " Hoffman said. "And I don’t think they consider seniors on
fixed income or what will happen. They’ll be forced out of their homes.”
One parent with two children in the district said the increase
would be too much for his family, too. Yody, who did not want to give his last
name, is the father of a 7-year-old and a 9-year-old. He was
skeptical about the costs related to the proposal — he said that a $170 million
plan could increase over time, thus increasing the financial impact on his
family.
“They said this is the amount they’re going to spend, but they don’t
know,” Yody said. “I hope it doesn’t pass.””
