The story line for New Jersey “patronage pits” usually reads the same. Top state
officials and agencies are aware of waste, fraud, corruption, unfair hiring
practices, etc. They do nothing to stop it.
They contribute to it.
An investigative reporter may eventually do a story
exposing outrageous behavior with people’s tax dollars. There might be multiple follow up stories because
the public is very interested. Next, you
might see some phony politicians responsible for the “patronage pits” fake outrage
and call for reforms. Eventually money
dries up and people go down.
We saw the same situation a few years ago with Luna
and the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission.
