“Terminal Leave”/Severance Not Part of Chief Caruso’s Current Contract

“Still, he will take with him a $342,000 payout for remaining unused sick, vacation, personal and holiday time, plus three months’ severance guaranteed by contract.”

The above was printed in the Record and written by Matthew McGrath.  Three months’ severance is NOT guaranteed by contract.  Where did that come from?

“Terminal Leave” appears to be common in some NJ union contracts for law enforcement.  However, terminal leave varies from town to town and contract to contract.

Chief Caruso does not have a union contract.  He has an individual employee contract.

Terminal leave/severance is not found anywhere in Chief Caruso’s current contract that was just approved on February 18, 2014.

The current Chief’s contract lists his salary at $167,331.  Three months terminal leave/severance would equate to $41,832.75.

Below is the contract.

I welcome anyone’s input correcting me if I wrong.
